- Established in 1945 by a cluster of Nations trying to preserve principles of peace
- From the time of establishment to now The United Nations has 193 member states that participate in trying to keep the peace between all nations
The League of Nations
The League of Nations, better known as The LN was established by the Paris Peace Conference on January 10, 1920. The Paris Peace Conference were responsible for ending the first World War. The League of Nations was the very first International Organization. Their sole purpose was to create peace between the nations, find diplomatic solutions, prevent wars, and keep order. Other jobs they took on was monitoring, limiting, or stopping weapon and drug trafficking, instilling labour laws, treatment of natives, and keeping everything in order. The League of Nations ended up with 58 states before it was disbanded. The League wanted to end hundreds of years of fighting but in the end couldn't do so. They had some failures in the 1920s which caused several countries to withdraw from the LN. And at the end it showed that the purpose of the LN couldn't even be filled by them because World War II occurred.
The United Nations
The United Nations was established October 24, 1945 to promote international peace and cooperation. The United Nations came about after World War II, they wanted to make sure the genocide that occurred didn't happen again. When the organization was first made, it started off with 51 member states, but now it has 193 participating states. The job of the UN is to keep economic and social order, prevent major wars, promote human rights, maintain the environment, maintaining international peace, etc. The peace keeping abilities of the United Nations was tested when it came about around the time of the Cold War, which was between the United States and the Soviet Union. The UN has forums for the members to express themselves and how they feel; General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, and many other bodies in the committee. The goal for the UN is to keep the peace and make sure all is right between nations to avoid conflict or make conflict worst. The General Assembly is basically a huge meeting off all the participating states on regular yearly sessions. The entire assembly is led by an elected president. At the General Assembly everything is voted on, like plans for peace, who should stay members, and things that should be done throughout the nations. A General Assembly resolution is when all the members come to a final decision and vote on one thing. The United Nations also has a Security Council, this is where all the peace keeping takes place, they have to maintain the peace and security of the nations. The Security Council
consist of fifteen spots. The Security General is the head of the Council, basically the overseer, he/she performs the acts entrusted to them.
