The Genocide
- The genocide of Bangladesh all started with Operation Searchlight which was began March 26, 1971. Operation Searchlight was a planned West Pakistan military operation to crack down on the Eastern Wing and stump out all political and military opposition. The military's plan was to take control of the major cities, but they didn't anticipate the opposition of the people. And as a result, Operation Searchlight, became the Bangladesh Liberation war or even better known as " The Bangladesh Genocide." This genocide claimed the lives of 300,000- 3,000,000 Bangladesh people, and 200,000-400,000 women were victim to genocidal rape.
- The 1971 Bangladesh genocide can actually be broken into different events, where you have the secret services committing crimes and raping women, the killing of Bangladesh intellectuals, and violence against minorities.
- We can start with the rape of about 200,000 Bangladesh women, the numbers aren't completely accurate due to debate, but there were many war babies born at the time. And its a known fact that thousands of Bangladesh women were raped, killed, and tortured during the war. Many women were also taken or kidnapped and kept as sex slaves.
- The intellectuals of Bangladesh were rounded up and executed but the Pakistan militia. They made lists of all the people who were scholars, teachers, poets, engineers, artists, etc. And all these people were sent to torture chambers to be executed in a mass killing.
- A lot of the minorities in Bangladesh were executed, all those that fled from India such as the Hindus were targeted, killed, or raped. There was a huge amount of violence between the groups.
- A lot of the outsiders viewed this genocide to be almost just as incredible as the Nazi genocide against the Jews.
- Because of the late ratification of the treaty in 1988 the 1971 Bangladesh Genocide wasn't really investigated, and they couldn't do much
- The War ended with the surrender of the Pakistan militia, Bangladesh people rejoiced when they got their liberation. But at what cost, they all suffered greatly, and received no help.
- War trials took place to try and condemn those responsible for the genocide. And many were put to Justice for the crimes committed in Bangladesh for those horrible nine months
